シドニーではもう知らない人はいないと言われているカンポスコーヒー(Campos Coffee)。
今回はそのニュータウン店に行ってきた様子です。

This time, I went to that Newtown Shop.
なぜカンポスコーヒーが有名なのか？ Why is Campos Coffee famous?
そもそもなぜカンポスコーヒーは有名なのか?
それにはしっかりした理由があります。
2002年にカンポスコーヒーはニュータウンにカフェをオープンしました(今回訪れたお店）。そしてオープン当初から一貫してこだわっているのが高品質な豆の調達・焙煎になり、それがシドニーコーヒー文化の流れに乗りシドニーのコーヒー文化を大きく発展させていきました。
So why is Campos Coffee famous in the first place?
There’s a solid reason for it.
In 2002, Campos Coffee opened a café in Newtown (the place I visited this time). From the very beginning, they have consistently focused on sourcing and roasting high-quality beans, and that has ridden the wave of Sydney’s coffee culture, helping to greatly develop the coffee scene in Sydney.
オーストラリアでは、2000年以前からすでにエスプレッソコーヒー文化は根付いていましたが、それでも今のように多くの人達は、
「どこの農園の豆なのか」
「焙煎日」
「品種」
などあまり意識していませんでした。
In Australia, the espresso coffee culture had already taken root even before 2000, but still, many people didn’t really pay much attention to things like
‘Which farm the beans came from,’
‘The roasting date,’
‘The variety,’
そこで カンポスコーヒーが次のような取り組みを進めました。
- 生産国や農園を明確にした高品質な豆を扱う
- 農園との直接的な取引関係を重視する
- 焙煎の品質を厳しく管理する
- バリスタ教育に力を入れる
- 「コーヒーをワインのように味わう」という考え方を広める
その結果多くのカフェが「産地」、「焙煎方法」、「品種」にこだわるようになりました。そして私達も「ただのコーヒー」ではなく「どの豆を使っているか」を気にするようになりました。
そのため今ではコーヒー好きのシドニー市民に「カンポスコーヒー（Campos Coffee）はなぜ有名？」と聞くと、「品質が良いから」というよりも、「今のシドニーのコーヒー文化を作った老舗ブランドだから」という答えが帰ってくることが多いです。
こういったことからこの「カンポスコーヒー(Campos Coffee)」はコーヒーの先駆者と評されています。
So Campos Coffee took the following initiatives:
- Dealing with high-quality beans with clearly identified producing countries and farms
- Focusing on direct trading relationships with farms
- Strictly managing the quality of roasting
- Putting effort into barista education
- Promoting the idea of “enjoying coffee like wine”
As a result, many cafes started to care about “origin,” “roasting methods,” and “varieties.” And we, too, began to pay attention to “which beans are being used,” rather than just “any coffee.”
Nowadays, if you ask coffee lovers in Sydney, “Why is Campos Coffee famous?”, the answer you often get isn’t just “because the quality is good,” but rather “because it’s a long-established brand that created today’s coffee culture in Sydney.”

ニュータウンの特徴 Features of a New Town
さてこのカンポスコーヒーがあるニュータウンですがシドニー中心地から電車で7分、バスで19分ほどで到着することができるサバーブです。
特徴として個性的なお店が多くそれらがキングストリート(King Street)沿いに並んでいます。
So, this New Town where Campos Coffee is located is a suburb you can get to in about 7 minutes by train or 19 minutes by bus from central Sydney.
One of its features is that there are lots of unique shops, and they’re all lined up along King Street.
アートとカルチャー Art & Culture
ニュータウンはストリートアートや壁画が多く街を歩くだけでも楽しめますし、多国籍なグルメも楽しめ、インディーズ音楽、アートギャラリーなどの文化活動も盛んです。
The new town has a lot of street art and murals, so just walking around is fun. You can also enjoy international cuisine, indie music, art galleries, and other cultural activities.

メインストリートのキングストリート(King Street)沿いには、世界各国のレストランやカフェが並びます。
タイ料理、ベトナム料理、中東料理、イタリアンなど選択肢が豊富です。またベジタリアンやビーガン向けの店も多いことで知られています。
Along King Street on Main Street, there are restaurants and cafes from all over the world.
You’ll find plenty of options like Thai, Vietnamese, Middle Eastern, and Italian. It’s also known for having lots of places that cater to vegetarians and vegans.
Tripadvicer のベスト1に選ばれたタイレストランもあります。
There’s even a Thai restaurant that was voted number one on TripAdvisor.
レトロとトレンド Retro & Trend
ニュータウンには大きなショッピングセンターがありません。その代わりに大変多くの個性的なお店が立ち並んでいます。キングストリート沿いには古着屋、オーガニックショップ、雑貨屋などが目立ちます。レトロとトレンドが共存しているサバーブです。
There isn’t a big shopping center in the new town. Instead, there are a lot of unique little shops lining the streets. Along King Street, you’ll notice vintage clothing stores, organic shops, and general goods stores. It’s a suburb where retro and trendy coexist.
交通の便利さ Convenience of transportation
ニュータウンへはシドニー中心地からバスもしくは電車で行くことが出来ます。
ニュータウン駅(Newtown Station)からシドニー中心部まで電車で約7分程度。
観光地のシドニーオペラハウスやサーキュラーキーからのアクセスも良好です。
You can get to Newtown from the center of Sydney by bus or train.
It takes about 7 minutes by train from Newtown Station to central Sydney.
Access to tourist spots like the Sydney Opera House and Circular Quay is also convenient.

と9路線のバスがニュータウンを通ります。
Here’s the bus stop along King Street.

どうやって行く How do I get there?
私は今回シドニーセントラル駅から電車に乗ってニュータウン駅まで行き、それから歩いてお店まで行きました。
今回もアプリRome2Rioを使って道筋を確認しながら行きました。
This time, I took the train from Sydney Central Station to Newtown Station, and then walked to the shop.
I also used the Rome2Rio app this time to check the route as I went.
アプリ上ではセントラル駅から電車で7分、セントラル駅レイルウェイスクエアLバススタンドから19分で行くことが出来るとあります。
The app says you can get there in 7 minutes by train from Central Station, or 19 minutes from the Central Station Railway Square L bus stop.

駅のホームからでもニュータウンらしさを感じることができます。

You can feel the New Town from the station platform.
ニュータウン駅 Newtown Station
駅を出て右折してキングストリート沿いに歩きます。
Turn right when you leave the station and walk along King Street.
キングストリートはいつも車通りが多いです。
King Street is always busy with traffic.
しばらくキングストリート沿いに歩くとミセンデンロード（Missenden Road）が見えてきます。右折します。(写真上）
If you walk along King Street for a while, you’ll see Missenden Road. then Turn right. (Photo above)
ミセンデンロードに入ればすぐに見つけることが出来ます。
この場所は最寄り駅ニュータウン(Newtown Station)より徒歩約11分ほどで着くことが出来ます。その道中ですがニュータウンの街並みを見て楽しんだり雰囲気を感じていれば到着しますので全く苦になりません。
You can find it right away when you get onto Missenden Road.
This place is about an 11-minute walk from the nearest station, Newtown Station. On the way there, you can enjoy the streetscape of Newtown and soak in the atmosphere, so it’s not bothersome at all.

店内の様子 Inside the shop
いざ店内へ。
Let’s head into the shop.
細長くそれほど大きくない店内です。そしてそして余計な飾りの無いシンプルな店内です。
店内に入ってすぐに感じたことは、気持ちの良い店内でなんだか嬉しくなる雰囲気。お店の雰囲気を邪魔しないようにいい感じでBGMが流れている。
いいお店です。
入ってすぐ左側にコーヒー豆が陳列されていました。
The store is narrow and not that big. And it has a simple interior with no extra decorations.
The first thing I felt when I entered was a pleasant atmosphere that made me happy. The background music plays just right, not interfering with the store’s vibe.
It’s a nice place.
Right after entering, on the left side, coffee beans were displayed.
まずはコーヒーをオーダー。
オーダーと支払いが先になります。
私はいつものフラットホワイト。ミルクを今回は豆乳にしてみました。
オーダーして店の奥に行きました。
You order and pay first.
I orderd with my usual flat white. But this time, I tried soy milk instead of regular milk.
After ordering, I went to inside of the shop.
小洒落たカウンター席。
私はそのカウンター席の反対側にある窓側の席に座りました。
A stylish counter seat.
I sat at the window seat on the opposite side of that counter.
オーダー Order
このお店では先にオーダーして支払いを済ませます。
持ち帰りならばそのままお店入口付近で待ちますが店内でコーヒーを楽しむのであれば支払いを済ませてお店の奥に行きます。
私は店内でコーヒーを楽しみたかったのでオーダーと支払いを済ませ店内奥へ行き窓側の席に座りました。
席に着くとすぐにコーヒーが来ました。
The coffee came as soon as I sat down.
今回私がオーダーしたのはレギュラーサイズフラットホワイトですがミルクを豆乳に変えてみました。(写真上)お代は$7.00でした。
写真では分かり難いのですが、実はフォームミルクの泡がきめ細やかで良質感がありました。
飲んでみると、まろやかでしっかりしている。濃厚なコーヒーが口の中に広がり上質の香りがホンの少しだけ鼻に抜けるのでリッチな感じ。飲み終わっても口の中にコーヒーが残っていて充実感を得られる。
This time I ordered a regular size flat white but tried swapping the milk for soy milk (top photo). It cost $7.00.
It’s a bit hard to see in the photo, but the foam milk actually had fine, high-quality bubbles.
When I tried it, it was mellow yet robust. The rich coffee spreads in your mouth, and a subtle, premium aroma just barely reaches your nose, giving a rich feeling. Even after finishing, the coffee lingers in your mouth, leaving a satisfying feeling.
私が思うにこのカンポスコーヒーのコーヒーは、決して眠気覚ましにガブ飲みするようなコーヒーではないと思います。
まさに、
「コーヒーをワインのように味わう」
体感しました。なんとなくシドニーで有名になる理由がわかる気がします。
In my opinion, I don’t think Campos Coffee’s coffee is the kind you’d chug just to wake up.
It’s exactly like experiencing,
‘tasting coffee like wine.’
Somehow, I feel like I understand why it might become famous in Sydney.
コーヒーを飲み終えてカップを見るとロゴが入っていました。
When I finished my coffee and looked at the cup, there was a logo on it.
一息ついてみて Take a breather
コーヒーを飲み一息ついてみて店内を見渡してみたのですが満席で入り口付近を見てみると常連感満載のお客様とスタッフが話をしている現場を見ました。ローカルに根付いている証拠です。
I took a sip of my coffee and looked around the shop, but it was full. When I looked near the entrance, I saw a scene where regular customers were chatting with the staff. It’s proof that this place is really rooted in the local community.
まとめ Summary
今回カンポスコーヒーニュータウン店に行ってきました。
平日の10時過ぎぐらいに訪れたのですが満席でカンポス人気を垣間見ることが出来ました。
このお店は、大人数で来てワイワイするようなお店ではなく、1人、2人ぐらいできてお店の雰囲気に任せてこのお店にいる時間を味わう。そんなお店だと思います。
持ち帰りもしてみましたが、やっぱりお店で飲むコーヒーは違います。
良質なコーヒーを楽しみたいのであればお店まで行って楽しむことをおススメします。
I went to Campos Coffee New Town this time.
I visited around 10 a.m. on a weekday, but it was full, giving me a glimpse of Campos’ popularity.
I think this place isn’t really for coming in a big group and making a lot of noise. It’s more for one or two people, just going with the flow of the café and enjoying the time spent there.
I also tried taking coffee to go, but as expected, coffee tastes different when you drink it at the café.
If you want to enjoy high-quality coffee, I recommend going to the café and savoring it there.
